Bespoke Chemical Chamber System for Corrosive Testing

Project Overview:
We were approached to design and fabricate a corrosive testing chamber for use in an engineering workshop. The project required durable, easy-to-clean surfaces with high resistance to abrasive chemicals, constant moisture exposure and extreme heat.

Client Requirements:
Fully bespoke sizing to fit perfectly on a pre-existing workbench.
Hygienic, non-porous materials with airtight sealing capabilities.
A clear viewing window to allow visual inspection of content without exposing the internal chamber.
Fast turnaround to meet our customers' testing schedule.

Our Solution:
We designed and manufactured a polypropylene cabinet using both welded and mechanical fixings, accompanied by a Cast Acrylic viewing window. This cabinet was assembled and put through a water test and a spark test on the interlock.
The unit included:
Sealed Glove Ports, accompanied by clamping rings.
Sloped Removable Viewing Panel to avoid debris buildup and improve clarity.
Non-Slip Table Feet.
Option of a Removable Side Panel to give a larger pass-through port if required.

Materials and Methods:
Polypropylene is used for its durability, high chemical resistance and glossy finish.
Cast Acrylic is used for its optical clarity and inherent chemical resistance.
Plastic Welding is used to seal the interlock under the water and the spark test.
Mechanical Fixings are used to give options for modification in the future.
CNC Machining for precision cut-outs.
All assembly is completed in-house, ensuring full quality control.

Challenges and Problem Solving:
We needed to make sure the material chosen was resistant to the chemicals being used by our customer, as well as utilising the space of the pre-existing surface, whilst fulfilling the needs of the cabinets' controlled inner environment.
We batch tested the material to make sure it was compatible with any solvents used.
We performed an on-site measurement visit.
Had constant communication with the customer throughout the build to ensure we were achieving their needs.

Results and Outcome:
The finished cabinet was installed on time, with zero snagging or modifications required after delivery.  The clear front panel allows staff to quickly identify reactions, reducing unnecessary opening and contamination risk. Although originally for use without their own workshop, our client now sells these as an option to their customers.
